You’ll be hearing an awful lot about keywords during our magento developer guide, to explain quickly: keywords are what people type into Google Search. Google then searches your page for these keywords to see if it’s relevant to the user’s search. Having keywords is useless unless they are the right keywords. For this reason, research is essential. By creating a free Google Adwords account you will be able to see exactly what keywords you should be using. A keyword with a high search volume and low competition is what you want to be keeping an eye out for. Such keywords are your best chance to get that first place position on Google search results.


If you have completed the previous step correctly, you will find yourself with a list of relevant keywords ready for use in your Magento category optimisation. Google uses your set keywords to determine your ranking so make sure that you have chosen the best keywords for your categories. Now that you have your list of keywords, you want to be putting them in the right place. Times have changed, and no longer can you just mash all of your keywords together at the top or bottom of the page. Doing so will cause Google to penalise you, resulting in your page showing up dead last in the search results.

Here are a few key places that Google will check when crawling your page’s code. These include;

1) Category Name

Your category’s title (or name) is what everyone on the front end of your eShop will see. This is the first place you want to be implementing your list of keywords. Although people viewing your eShop can see fancy designs and images, Google can’t. This means you have to tell Google what your page contains through text content. As you can see in the image above, the name for this category is “men”. All this tells Google is “men”. Without context Google doesn’t know what to make of your site! A good idea would be to implement one of your keywords.

For Example; Instead of simply having “men” try setting this as “men’s clothes”. From the Google AdWords image further up, you can see that “men’s clothes” has 33,100 average monthly searches. A substantial amount making the keyword phrase “men’s clothing” worthy of a place in your Magento category optimisation.

2) URL

The next area our Magento developer guide will focus on is the category’s URL. The URL is the text at the top of the browser containing the page’s address. Google uses this to identify what your page contains in order to determine its relevance. Having one or more of your keywords in here is vital to your Magento category optimisation, it’s one of the first places Google looks to when crawling your site. As you can see in the above image, the set URL Key for this category is “mens-clothing”.

Note: It is crucial that you NEVER use spaces in your URL key. Instead, use hyphens ( – ) as spaces will result in your URL looking like this:  The more spaces, the more %20 there are to make your URL look untrustworthy and unprofessional.

3) Category Description

Now onto the third area of focus for our Magento developers guide, the category’s description. While conducting your Magento category optimisation you may realise that all of these areas have the same purpose. To show Google that your page is the most relevant for your chosen search terms. However, the category’s description allows for the most text content of any area. This means, more space for you to hide those precious keywords that you collected in step one. Take full advantage of the vast space by carefully placing the best keywords you have chosen.

For Example; The description in the above image is “Browse our huge selection of mens clothing which includes shirts…..”. If you’ve been paying attention you’ll notice that there is room for improvement here. Instead you may want to try “Browse our huge selection of mens clothing which includes shirtsjackets & so much more. With mens clothes in all sizes you’ll find the perfect fit here at!”.

You will notice the huge difference in the two descriptions. The optimised version contains more keywords including the 33,100 searches keyword “mens clothes”. Another factor that is worth pointing out is that it is incredibly important that you write all your content with the reader in mind. Google may notice your description but if your customers don’t like it or if it makes you look unprofessional you will find a dramatic decrease in the success of your e-Commerce site.

4) Page Title

Your category’s page title (or SEO title) is what shows up when people find you in the Search results. Optimising this area is absolutely vital in you Magento category optimisation. It is a great place for keywords in your chosen list. As seen above, the page title that is set is “Mens Clothing – Excellent style and quality, shirts, polos”. 1) You need to find the happy medium between not enough keywords and too many keywords. Having too many (or few) keywords may damage your Google Search ranking.

2) Avoid using the word “and”. Your SEO title is limited in characters, use & to make more space for those valuable keywords!

5) Meta Keywords

Although this feature is not used as much by Google anymore, it is still worthwhile placing some keywords here. Meta Keywords are in your page’s source code and tell Google what your page is going to contain. It is advised to have between 5-10 meta keywords, any more than 10 will make your page too vague, meaning that you will score lower for more results. The whole concept of Magento category optimisation is to score higher results for your target audience. 6) Meta Description

Our Magento developer guide has one sixth and final area of interest, the category’s meta description. Found under the page title in the search results, it is the only area other than the main description where you can fit in lots of essential keywords that will aid in your Magento category optimisation. You may also want to include some useful information such as your contact information. In the image above, it shows that the meta description is the same as the category’s description. This is because if you don’t set a meta description, Magento will do it for you! Meaning, if your description already contains all your main keywords you will not need to customise a meta description. It is advised however, that you do. It seems more personal and allows you to put different keywords in to rank higher for more searches.


With both of the previous steps succesfully completed, you will now find you have conducted your Magento category optimisation to it’s fullest extent. Google will, in time, pick up on these keywords. Once Google has visited your page and seen all these relevant, well placed keywords they will reward you with a high search ranking.
